Students may not realize how much welding technology affects our lives. Almost everything we use depends on welding which is the process of fusing two pieces of material together. The BCIT welding program provides an overview of the welding trades and emphasizes the skills that are needed to enter the field. Students study Oxyacetylene cutting and burning, Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG), Metal Inert Gas (MIG) and Plasma Arc Cutting. The course curriculum includes basic welding to fabrication and layout, Electric Arc Welding and strict safety standards. Basic blueprint reading and welding symbols are also mastered.
Upon completion of the welding course curriculum, students will enter the work force with an AWS (American Welding Society) entry level certification.
There is a close affiliation between BCIT and the local welding and fabrications shops as well as local unions. The school and students participate in AWS contests, seminars, and meetings, the students also compete against other vocational high schools in the state at the SKILLS USA State Competition.
Graduates of the BCIT welding program can find employment in almost any industry they choose including: construction, automotive, shipbuilding, utilities, aerospace, process plants, railroads, electronics, and appliance manufacturing. |
