Culinary Arts & Hospitality
Culinary Arts affords an overall view of the commercial foods industry covering positions available and job opportunities from basic kitchen helpers to working chefs. Students start with basic food preparation skills and then advance, learning related areas of purchasing and managing as well. The course encompasses sanitation, safety, and usage and care of equipment and utensils. The program is taught through a combination of a theoretical base of the trade, and practical, hands-on experiences working under close supervision as pantry and preparation cook, sandwich and salad maker, sauté or broiler cook and maître d’. The Cosmetology curriculum fulfills the licensing requirements of the New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology. Students who have completed the course and have earned a high school diploma or GED are eligible to take the State Board Examination. In the first and second years, students are taught the basics of draping, shampooing, manicuring, pedicuring, hair cutting and styling, permanent waving, facials, make-up, and hair removal. Construction TechnologyBuilding Trades prepares students for careers in the construction industry. Carpentry and masonry are the “building blocks” of the building trades program. The students will demonstrate proficiency skills, safety, and attitudinal qualities required for employment in this field. In Building Trades the students will be evaluated on accuracy, speed, and quality of workmanship required for an entry level worker.Possible Career Paths:

Automotive Technology is designed to meet the ongoing demand for trained, (ASE) Certified Automotive Technicians. This program includes high tech training in the five areas of fundamentals, braking systems, steering and suspension, drivelines, electricity and electronics. These five modules combine to give the student an exposure to the entire field. Students work on vehicles using state of the art equipment to perform routine maintenance and to diagnose and repair problems. This program is certified by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF).

Auto Collision Repair Technology
Auto Body Repair covers a variety of topics including use of hand tools, safety practices, and identification, construction, removal, replacement, and repair of automobile body parts. Students learn refinishing including full body painting. They are also exposed to oxy-acetylene, Mig, and aluminum welding. Students are taught frame straightening on state-of-the-art equipment. They are also exposed to air brushing and are taught light mechanical repairs such as replacing water pumps, suspension parts, radiators, and condensers damaged in collisions. Students who satisfactorily complete the program can find employment in the auto body industry and will be able to progress rapidly to positions of greater responsibility.

Architecture & Design Technology
Drafting is the language of engineers, designers, scientists, technicians and tradespeople. Drafting is written in the form of drawings, which represent the shape and size of an object. These drawings are then given to the manufacturers who produce items according to the specifications in the drawings. The students will gain a working understanding of the equipment, software, materials, and tools of the trade. The students will be able to make and interpret drawings, sketches, charts, and schematics. An understanding of CAD, Computer Aided Drafting, and its uses will be an integral part of the course. This course also reflects related academic skills in mathematics, physics, and communications necessary for success as a drafter. Allied Health Professionals
Allied Health is designed to prepare students for the following careers in the health field: Certified Clinical Medical Assisting (CCMA), Medical Assistant/Receptionist (works in physicians’ offices with patients and insurance), and Certified Medication Assistant (works with patients and their medications in a variety of settings). All certified designations depend upon the student’s successful completion of the appropriate certifying examination. Advertising Art & Computer Graphics will prepare students with the knowledge and skills necessary to obtain entry level employment in the following areas: photography, production art, layout art, lettering, advertising, fashion, computer graphics, desk top publishing, illustration, display, and design. A large portion of assigned projects is designed to develop a portfolio of samples that are a requirement for obtaining employment in art related jobs. In Advertising, Art, & Computer Graphics the students will develop attitudinal skills that will help them gain employment, as well as prepare them as workers who will be able to function successfully in the job market. The ability to meet job deadlines and to accept criticism are examples of such skills.

Academy for Performing Arts
The BCIT Academy of Performing Arts is an immersive four-year, conservatory program dedicated to preparing students for post-secondary training and careers in their chosen performing arts discipline. Applicants must meet minimum academic and artistic requirements demonstrated through a competitive application and audition process to be selected as a Theatre, Dance, Vocal Music or Instrumental Music major. The Academy of Performing Arts provides students with quality training provided by professional artists in their discipline, while allowing opportunities to train in the other disciplines, creating well rounded and marketable artists. The Academy is a highly specialized and safe learning community promoting professionalism, integrity, and citizenship while challenging students through rigorous academics. Advanced Manufacturing and Fabrication
All careers in Advanced Manufacturing require students to have a strong mechanical ability, specialized skills, communication skills and computation skills. Students will be required to apply problem solving, make decisions, and work in a team environment. Preparation for careers in Advanced Manufacturing must begin in the elementary grades and continue through high school, allowing students to gain experience in applied, real-time manufacturing situations.
Students will also find it advantageous to participate in a career and technical program that will expand skills in specific jobs that meet the requirements of the employer. There are excellent opportunities in Advanced Manufacturing where technology and career pathways provide for satisfying careers. The BCIT Advanced Manufacturing & Fabrication program is designed for a smooth transition into a post-secondary certificate and/or degree program.
