Mr. Galarza

In addition to serving nearly eleven years as a highly-qualified instructor, I have around five previous years of experience as a tutor, mentor, and substitute teacher.  Since Day One of my experience as an educator to a huge diversity of students—from at-risk middle school students to troubled teens in a drug rehab to disaffected learners at the Alternative School to the melting pot of under-, at-level, and exceptional achievers in the mainstream high school—I’ve continually built on the conviction to create a learning environment as realistic as society while still being as warm as a home, and from there excel in every challenge presented by the curriculum and by society.  I offer a learning approach marked by a natural gift for personally connecting with a diversity of students, an established wisdom of the multi-layered needs of youth, and a passion for the written (and spoken) word that comes from being an author and poet.

I believe the classroom ought to be a place to stretch and train thinking skills, objectivity, solid reasoning, factual reliance, and foster the development of and hunger for rigor, inquiry, experimentation, and critical analysis; at the same time, however, it should also prize the flourishment of imagination, creativity, possibility, the exploration of “other”, and the willingness to let perspective be more akin to the bamboo than the oak in the Japanese proverb: "The bamboo that bends is stronger than the oak that resists."
