New Students, New Connections: Building Friendships Through Teamwork

Building friendships and fostering a sense of belonging were at the heart of a recent team-building event at our Medford Campus.

On October 6, new students participated in a series of interactive activities designed to encourage collaboration, strengthen communication skills, and help them develop positive relationships with their peers.

Upperclassmen played an important role in the event, helping facilitate activities and providing guidance and encouragement to their fellow students. Their involvement created opportunities for new students to connect with experienced peers while promoting leadership, teamwork, and school spirit.

The event highlighted BCIT Medford's commitment to creating a welcoming and supportive school environment where students can build meaningful connections and feel part of the school community.

K-9 Demonstration Brings Real-World Learning to BCIT Medford

BCIT Medford Veterinary Technology and Criminal Justice students had the opportunity to participate in a hands-on K-9 demonstration featuring Perry Parks, a retired Medford K-9 officer and owner of Absolute Control Dog Training, along with two officers from the Burlington County Sheriff’s Office.
Students learned how working K-9s are trained and utilized in the field, including a live demonstration of how an explosives-detection K-9 conducts a search. The presenters also shared real-world examples of K-9 operations and provided a behind-the-scenes look at the training and preparation required for these specialized teams.

The experience brought Veterinary Technology and Criminal Justice students together for a unique learning opportunity and an inside look at the important roles K-9s and their handlers play in public safety.

BCIT Construction Technology Students Put Their Skills to Work with Habitat for Humanity

Six BCIT Construction Technology students are taking their skills beyond the classroom and putting them to work for a meaningful cause.

Under the guidance of Construction Technology instructor Alberto Torres, three juniors and three seniors are heading to Camden to work alongside Habitat for Humanity on a home currently in the final stages of construction. Depending on the progress of the project, students may assist with flooring, painting, finishing work, site cleanup, and organizing tools and materials.

The experience gives students an opportunity to step onto an active construction site with their toolboxes and tool belts and approach the day just as they would a professional job. The skills they are developing in BCIT’s Construction Technology program are put into practice while students gain valuable hands-on experience in a real-world environment.

“I think one of the best parts of the experience is that the students are not only developing their construction skills, but they are also volunteering their time and using those skills to help a family in need,” said Torres.

Habitat for Humanity’s new home construction director, Vince, has also shared that he enjoys having BCIT students on the job site because they arrive prepared and willing to work.

For these students, the experience brings together career preparation, hands-on learning, and community service. It is work-based learning in action, giving students the opportunity to build their skills while helping build something that will make a lasting difference for a family.
