Diesel Technology

The Diesel Technology program is a two semester program that allows students to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue a rewarding and in-demand career in the transportation and heavy equipment industries by training students to become diesel mechanics, specializing in the repair and maintenance of diesel engines used in heavy-duty vehicles (trucks, buses, construction equipment).

First Semester: Focuses on foundational knowledge and skills:

  • Safety: Emphasizes safety protocols in a workshop environment.

  • Tools and Equipment: Proper use and maintenance of hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment.

  • Preventative Maintenance: Understanding and performing preventative maintenance inspections on diesel engines.

  • Electrical Systems: Diagnosing and repairing electrical components in diesel vehicles.

  • Drivetrain Components: Learning about and servicing truck axles, driveshafts, wheels, and tires.

  • Braking Systems: Understanding the function and maintenance of truck brake systems (air brakes, hydraulic brakes).

Second Semester:

  • Engine Repair: In-depth study of diesel engine operation, diagnosis, and repair, including fuel systems, cooling systems, and engine performance.

  • Transmission and Drivetrain: Advanced study of transmissions, differentials, and other drivetrain components.

  • Electronics and Diagnostics: Focus on advanced diagnostic techniques using computer systems and specialized software.

  • Hydraulics and Pneumatics: Understanding and servicing hydraulic and pneumatic systems used in heavy-duty equipment.
