Introduction To Health Careers highlights basic concepts that will be expanded during formal health career training. Health careers that will benefit from this introductory course include Certified Nurse Aides, Certified Homemaker Home Health Aides, Certified Medical Assistants, Patient Care Technicians, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Dental Assistants. Concepts discussed in modules 1 and 2 are beneficial to all healthcare career settings. These concepts highlight basic preparation for success in healthcare fields. Module 3 will be of significant benefit to the LPN candidates and other healthcare settings where safe medication administration is required.

Course Goals:

1. Provide cognitive, psychomotor, and affective introductory training on concepts of basic preparation for success in healthcare fields.

2. Prepare respective candidates in mathematical concepts for accurately calculating medication dosages for safe administration.

3. Prepare students in healthcare fields to meet standards needed for state and/or national certification and licensure. 

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Identify healthcare careers that meet individual career needs.

2. Apply basic concepts for successful outcomes in healthcare training. 

Module 1:

An introduction to health careers encompasses a multifaceted approach, focusing on the foundational skills necessary for success in the dynamic healthcare field. This includes a strong emphasis on classroom and clinical readiness, ensuring students are prepared for both theoretical and practical applications. Crucial study and test-taking skills are developed to navigate the rigorous academic demands. Furthermore, recognizing the diverse student population, specific support is provided for ESL students to overcome language barriers and thrive. A comprehensive orientation program outlines the steps to success, guiding students through the initial stages of their healthcare education and setting them on a path for a fulfilling career.  

Module 2:

Basic skills in health careers are foundational for providing safe and effective patient care. These skills begin with meticulous handwashing and stringent infection control practices to prevent the spread of pathogens. Professionalism and civility are paramount, fostering a respectful and collaborative environment. Patient rights and safety are central, encompassing adherence to HIPAA regulations to protect patient privacy and ensuring safe practices through proper body mechanics. A strong understanding of medical terminology is also essential, enabling clear communication and accurate documentation within the healthcare setting.

Module 3:

Dosage calculation is a critical skill for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), encompassing a range of mathematical concepts and practical applications. Foundational to this skill are the understanding and conversion between standard, metric, and household measurement systems. LPNs must be proficient in calculating oral, injectable (including subcutaneous, intramuscular, and powdered reconstitution), and intravenous doses, whether administered via pump or drops. Furthermore, they need to accurately determine dosages for topical medications. A thorough understanding of medication administration equipment is essential, ensuring safe and effective delivery of prescribed treatments.
